Cohos are in!! 10/14/2010

I took the hobie out for a couple hours this afternoon.  The browns and steelhead were not biting but the cohos were.  I let out my first line with a stick bait and trolled while retying my second line and sure enough a fish hit before I pulled the knot tight.   The fish was a nice eight pound female coho.  I did a few more laps around the harbor and caught a few more before the bite finally slowed as the sun peaked through some clouds.   I saw some fish jumping in the marina so I tied up to a dock and through out some spawn under slip bobbers.  It paid off as I landed two more cohos.   Not bad for about 3 hours of fishing.

Crankbait Kings 09/14/2010

I fished the harbor for a couple of hours this evening with the hobie and had a pretty good time.   The fishing started slow but after an hour it started heating up.    I caught four chinook salmon trolling crankbaits in the river channel.  Three fish came on a yellow and purple Rapala DT 10 and the other came on a firetiger Thunderstick Jr.   Its good bring some extra treble hooks and split rings along when fishing with cranks.  These kings will straighten split rings out quite easily.

Shore Fishing 09/10/2010

Phil and I loaded the kayaks on our cars and headed to the lake only to  find the forecast was a little off.  East winds made it pretty rough out there so we decided to cast for some salmon from shore.   I started casting one of my favorite fall king baits and had a king crush it.  After thrashing around on the surface it spit the hook.  Shortly after, I hooked into another king that won this battle after fighting for a few minutes.

Phil  decided to changed baits and nailed a big king on his first cast.   About five minutes later I hooked up again and finally landed a nice female King Salmon.   It was a fun morning of fishing while it lasted.   The action was fast for a while and died as quick as it started.   We were done fishing by 7:30 A.M.

Harbor Browns 08/18/2010

I fished a couple hours this evening for brown trout.   I marked a lot of fish on the sonar but had some trouble getting bites.   After about six laps around the harbor I took off one of my spoons to a small stick bait and caught this nice brown.  I trolled it behind a slide diver about fifteen feet deep.   Soon after my battery died and I no longer had use of my sonar or light so I headed in.  The water temperature was sixty-six degrees on the surface.

Night Fishing 08/18/2010

The other night some friends and I did a little night fishing for salmon.  We caught seven kings mostly on glow spoons.   Jeff's son Caleb caught the first and biggest fish of the day.  He reeled in this a fourteen pound king that hit a spoon on a ten color leadcore.    His arms were a little sore after the battle but he did a great job reeling it in.

Rigging 07/25/2010

Ive been asked about how I am rigging my Torpeedo Divers so I took some pictures so everyone can see.     The first thing I did was replace the release with a Dubro downrigger release so it can trip.  Then I drilled a small hole in the fin to add an addition piece of fishing line with a snap swivel.   This allows the diver to release and slide down the line with out falling off.   Now I can put as much line as I want behind the Torpeedo Diver with out taking it off by hand when fighting a fish.

I also modify my Dipsy divers to slide down the line when a fish hits.  This allows me to put as much line behind the diver as I want.  I used the same Dubro Downrigger release on the diver and I add a snap to the swivel that the leader normally attaches too.

On both rigs the line comes from the rod, goes through the release and then through the snap to the bait.   I find both techniques are very effective and add more stealth to my presentation.

Salmon-a-rama 07/18/2010

This past week I fished Salmon a rama.   I targeted Brown trout since they have been getting bigger than the king salmon the last few years.  It worked out for one fellow in a boat who bagged a record setting 41.8 pounder.  My biggest fish weighed in a twelve and a quarter pounds which was a few pounds short of winning the kayak division.  My most effective set up was a stinger spoon thrity feet behind a Torpeedo diver twenty feet down.  If you have not tried fishing with torpeedo divers from a kayak or a boat you should.   They are a great tool for controlled depth fishing.

The salmon fishing is HOT!!! 07/06/2010

The salmon were really biting  this morning.  I launched the Pro Angler at about five A.M  and set my lines shortly after.  The water near shore is very cold right now so I started in about twenty feet of water.  I had one quick hit on a magnum spoon but the fish got off.     A half hour went by with out another bite before my next which was a small chinook about four pounds.    I switched my other to lines over to magnum size spoons and it paid off.    The three color leadcore was the next to get bit.  I landed a six pound coho.  At this point I was in forty feet of water and the action was just starting to pick up.  I started reseting my lines and my torpeedo diver rod started screaming before I got my second line in the water.  It turned out to be a twelve pound king.  I snapped some pictures and reset my lines again.  Seconds later my dipsy got hit hard!  This king was even bigger than the last.  I caught a couple more smaller fish after that and decided to call it a day when the wind really started picking up.  It was a great morning on the water.
