another great day on the water. 06/02/2011

Phil and I decide to get out for some more cohos before work today and the fishing was even better than yesterday.   We had our limit in an hour and also released two fish.  Dodgers and flies did the trick again.  The fly color didn't seem to matter as we had four different flies in the water that all took fish.   In fact we had 5 quick doubles and 2 other stragglers and the day was over.    It was just another reason why I like fishing from my hobie so much.  That mirage drive allowed us to keep our baits moving at the right speed while we fought the fish on our other line.

OK, I'm jealous and humbled. What's the best time to get out for the coho? My schedule has not allowed me to get out before 10AM or after 7PM this season and I have not even marked any salmon, browns or lake trout during those daytime hours. Am I fishing the wrong place or wrong time?

Jim,

Cohos pretty much bite all day long. The most important part of catching fish is to fish where the fish are. Even though I am catching fish in shallow, the fish on your side of the lake might be further out. If you find bait you should find fish. Also, at times like this when many fish are near the surface I don't always mark fish on my locator. If cohos are around they have a lot of trouble passing up an orange size 00 dodger with a peanut fly behind it. Kings and lake trout on the other hand will be deeper and will be more likely to bite a spoon or size 0 dodger and bigger fly.

Hey Rob and Phil, you guys do not know me but I am the guy that almost bought your Bimini 15 a few months back. I have to say thanks to this site for keeping me interested in kayak fishing and have done so every chance I get. I have not gone on LM as of yet but my friend just got into kayak fishing and went out in my Trident 13 yesterday and caught fish his first time out. This is were it gets interesting. My friend tells me about a Bimini 15 for sale on craigs list. I say "that sounds like the one I almost bought but was too slow on in the beggining of the year." To make a long story short, my buddy has bought Phils old Bimini. Thanks for putting up this site and all the advice you have given!!!!

Rob,

You need to post more =) I was planning on heading out to either Kenosha or Milwaukee and was thinking about trolling with the dodgers and flies. Do I need to use a 1/2 ounce sinker or do you think the dodger and fly would be sufficient? Also, when should I switch to the stick baits. Thanks again for all your help.
