Hey everyone,  it has been a long time since I last posted.   Over the last few months my time has been occupied by the opening of a new store in Winthrop Harbor Illinois.   It is one of the most extensive selections of  trout and salmon tackle around.   If you can't make it into the store you can check out our selection online at www.LakeMichiganAngler.com  The store actually has quite a few items that are not available online yet but will be over the next year.

The weather this spring has made things tough for fishing on Lake Michigan, but if you can pick your days the fishing can be great.   Cohos started showing up in full force a few weeks ago along with a few big kings.  The bite started off with body baits like Brad's Thinfish, Berkeley Flicker Shad, and Rattling Rogues catching the majority of fish.   Over the last week the water has warmed and the bite switched to a dodger and fly bite.  The cohos are  blast to catch on light tackle and are my favorite to eat.
Right now the winds are howling out of the north and really messing up the water clarity near shore.   If you want to get some of these fish be ready for a long paddle off shore or wait for it to clear up.

Hi Rob
Welcome back. Missed your reports. Glad to hear that you are still blogging - good luck on the new tackle shop venture!
I am gearing up for the season and wanted to try using some lightweight inline planer boards this year. i have a couple of DualFins that I hope to use (see http://www.bulletbobber.com/dualfin.html). I know that you are a big proponent of planer boards, but I was wondering how important this is from a Pro Angler, which is a pretty quiet ride anyway? Seems like the advantage planer boards bring with boat-shy fish may disappear with a quiet kayak anyway. Your thoughts?

Jim,

Planer boards serve a few different purposes. First they do get you baits away for boat shy fish, but that is not much of an issue with the kayak. They also allow you to cover more water by spreading your lines out. So instead of having a 10 foot wide foot print in the water you can have a 100 foot area covered. Lastly, they allow you to run multiple lines with out as many tangles. Here in WI we are allowed three lines so planers give me space to run a third bait down the middle
