Ice fishing 12/21/2010

It has been a while since my last report.  Most of my favorite fishing spots are frozen so it will be a while before  the next kayak fishing report.    Hopefully it will be an early spring.  The earliest kayak fishing trip so far was February 27th.   In 2011 I plan to break that record.

Before we start dreaming about spring there is still good fishing out on the ice.   I hit an old favortite spot of mine that I have not fished in years and picked up a nice steelhead.  She hit a tube jig in 7 feet of water.

Do you use a fishfinder when ice fishing? I was thinking about pulling mine out of the PA and trying to rig it as a portable unit for use on the ice. Some work involved. I probably should have just bought a portable unit to begin with, and then stripped out the guts to install in the PA for kayak fishing, and then re-assemble as a portable for ice fishing.

Jim,

I use a Vexilar FL-20 for ice fishing. If you dont want to buy a separate locator for ice fishing go ahead and take the one from your PA. Personally I like a flasher much more for ice fishing. Make sure that the fish ID on your lcd is turned off. This will make it easier to figure out what is your jig and what is a fish.

Haven't heard anything from you lately. Been out yet? Ice is gone, but nothing hitting yet on this side of Lake MI. Keep us posted.
