Double Header!!! 11/11/2010

This afternoon I trolled around one of my favorite harbors with a couple of my favorite stickbaits and had a little luck with some brown trout and steelhead.    After searching for about an hour I found myself with a double!!   I was trolling through some boat slips when my right side rod bent over with a fish on.   As I was landing the fish I noticed a steelhead jumping with a lure in its mouth and I realized it was my other bait.  I quickly got the brown trout in the net and saw it was tangled with my other line.  I was able to untangle it and start fighting the steelhead.  Before I knew it I was lucky enough to land both fish.   After a little more searching I got into a few more fish.  I landed two more good size female browns, a small pike,  and lot one other fish.   Not bad for a short afternoon of fishing.  There seems to be a few more fish around then the last time I was out.  Hopefully more will keep showing up!

Hello again, Rob -
Looks like you catch and keep a lot of big salmon, browns, steelhead, etc. Hust curious - Have you tried smoking any of these? I have been cold-smoking the Chinook I caught this season and they turn out great. I wonder if brown trout & steelhead would also taste as good?

Jim,

I don't keep to many of the fish I catch. A lot of people like to eat browns and steelhead. I don't really like brown trout, especially this time of year. If you are going to eat them; smoking is the way to go. If I do keep a fish to eat I typically keep steelhead. They taste much better than brown trout in my opinion. Hot smoking is probably the better way to go with either kind of fish.

Another queston, now that the cold weather has set in... What do you wear when fishing in cold weather? Drysuit? Waders + fleece? I am sure that you have put your yak away for the season by now, but come spring, what will you wear to stay warm, dry and safe? I need to get the right gear for spring and fall.

Jim,

When I was in my old kayak I wore waders, fleece, and a dry top. Now that I am in the Pro Angler I don't get wet at all so I just make sure to wear warm clothes minus the waders and dry top.
